Heuristics
- Green bell pepper goes well with (red) meat; red bell pepper is good for salads.
- Potatoes and pumpkins can be pre-cooked in the microwave before frying them in a pan to reduce frying time.
- Diced bacon in small doses adds flavour to dishes.
- When frying, garlic can be added last to the pan to increase the garlic note.
Cooking a spaghetti bolognese variation
Ingredients
Whole-wheat spaghetti | 1/2 package |
Ground meat (pork & beef mix) | 250 g |
Tomatoes (small) | 2 |
Tomato mark | 1 tablespoon |
Green bell pepper | 1/2 |
Onion | 1/2 |
Salt | 2 teaspoons |

- Cook spaghetti
- Cut bell pepper, onion, and tomatoes
- Start frying vegetables
- Add meat to the frying pan
- Add salt and spice
Can be served with parmesan cheese.
Making US-style pancakes
Ingredients
Flour | 1 cup |
Milk | 1 cup |
Salt | 1 1/2 teaspoons |
Baking powder | 2 tablespoons |
Egg | 1 |

Preparation
- Mix flour, salt, and baking powder in a large bowl
- Mix milk and egg well in a separate container
- Mix flour and milk mixtures, but not thoroughly. The dough must not be completely well mixed. Mix it until everything is wet and the dough is "shaggy"—see here for reference
- Heat pan (medium flame), put pancake dough in the pan and then place blueberries on top of the dough
- Turn only once
Baking french baguette
Ingredients
Flour | 3 2/3 cups |
Warm water | 1/4 cup |
Cold water | 2 cups |
Salt | 2 teaspoons |
Active dry yeast | 1 1/2 teaspoon |
Preparation
- Mix warm water and active dry yeast in a small cup
- Mix flour and salt in a large bowl
- Mix flour and yeast mixtures
- Add cold water until the dough is "shaggy"—see here for reference
- Cover with plastic wrap and let rest for 30 min
- Flour a work surface, put dough on the surface, press it into rectangle and fold it. Turn and repeat.
- Put dough in an oiled bowl and cover with plastic. Let rest for 1 to 2 hours
- Place dough on a baking sheet with parchment paper
- Make loaves out of dough, cover with towel and let rise for 30 to 45 min
- Pre-heat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C)
- Uncover loaves, sprinkle with flour, slash top, and put baking sheet with loaves in oven
- Bake about 30 to 45 min
